For various reasons, each of them excellent, we no longer review general catalogues in our print issues. Single subject catalogues, however, are always welcome if they’re printed. One such came from Jarndyce in the summer: WOMEN Part IV: Books By, For and About Women.
The firm does not believe in excessive margins or leading and as a result the catalogue’s 60-odd pages are well filled.
Much interesting detail comes with it, ie Georgiana Clark’s Serviettes and how to fold them [1875]: ‘A practical guide to folding napkins, including “The Boat”, appropriate when a naval chief is the honoured guest, “The Victoria Regis” for a distinguished botanist’ - and so on. What would be the equivalent shape today? A tablet?
